Can AI Build My Website? A ChatGPT and Claude Guide

Yes. ChatGPT or Claude can help you build a website. Start by choosing what you want them to deliver: a plan, website files, or changes in a connected builder. A plan is text you can review. HTML and CSS files can become a site after you test and host them. A connected builder or coding agent can take more steps, but it needs the right tool and your permission. Typing “build my website” into a plain chat does not give that chat access to your domain or hosting account.

Here is a practical route for a small site:

1. Write down real facts. List your services, location, contact method, brand assets, and the action visitors should take. Mark unknown prices, hours, reviews, and policies as unknown. Use the website brief guide to turn those facts into a page map.
2. Choose the output before you prompt. If you need only wording and page structure, use a normal ChatGPT or Claude chat. If you need a portable page, ask for complete files. If you need the assistant to edit a repository or a hosted builder, first connect the correct tool and check its permissions.
3. Build one small version. For a simple page, follow the ChatGPT landing-page guide. For several linked pages in a new repository, follow the Claude Code multi-page guide. Do not add a form, booking system, or blog until you know who will maintain it.
4. Test the result yourself. Check claims against your source facts. Open every page at desktop and phone widths. Use the links and forms. Fix failures before you publish. Then follow the launch review.
5. Publish through a host you control. A local preview or downloaded file is not a public website. For plain HTML and CSS, use the static publishing guide. Keep a copy of the tested files so you can reverse a bad release.

What can a plain AI chat actually do?

Use ChatGPT or Claude to turn your facts into a brief, draft copy, compare layouts, or explain code. Give it a specific visitor and goal. For example: “Make a one-page brief for a bicycle repair shop. Use only the services and contact address below. Mark missing prices and hours. List the checks I should run before launch.” Read its output as a draft. A fluent sentence can still contain a false business claim.

If you give the chat a public page URL, ask it to say whether it could read that page. Claude documents web search and direct-page fetch when the feature is enabled. Access and settings vary. When do you need files, a builder, or an agent?

Ask for files when you want portable source that you or a developer can inspect. For a static page, this can be index.html, styles.css, and local image files you have the right to use. Keep paths relative, test the files in a browser, and host the tested output. A code block in a chat is not a deployed site. A downloadable file still needs checks for broken links, layout, and content.

Use a connected builder when you want to work inside that builder's project. Its native AI controls may change pages it owns. They do not necessarily change a different host or give you portable code. Check the builder's preview, source export, domain, and rollback options before you rely on it. Use a coding agent, such as Claude Code, when there is a repository to create or edit and you can review the resulting diff. Give it a small folder, approved inputs, and tests to run. If the assistant you mean is Instinct or Meta's Muse, first confirm that product identity. Then ask the same practical question: can this account read the site, make files, or use an authorized editor? Do not infer a Figment connection from an assistant's name. What should you check before the site goes live?

Check the work that visitors will use, not only the assistant's summary. Compare every headline, price, service, image, and testimonial with approved source material. A fabricated review or an example email address can look finished in a preview. Ask for a list of placeholders and remove each one.

Test navigation on the homepage and every deeper route. Resize the page and use the menu, buttons, and forms at a phone width. Record a failure and retest the same action after a fix. Treat extra features as separate jobs. A drawn contact form is not proof that messages arrive. Use the contact-form delivery guide to check receipt and failure states. Before launch, check titles, canonicals, and sitemap URLs, then connect the domain without disturbing email records. None of these checks promises search traffic.

Where does Figment fit today?
