Short answer: yes, AI can build you a website, and it'll be live in under a minute. Whether it can build you a website worth having depends on how specific your business is.

I'll go part by part, because "can AI build a website" collapses about six different jobs into one question and the answer is different for each.

Structure: yes, completely

Deciding a homepage needs a hero, a services section, social proof and a contact block is a solved problem. AI does this perfectly because it's pattern matching against millions of sites that all have the same skeleton. You will never again stare at a blank page wondering what goes where. That's real progress and I don't want to undersell it.

Copy: yes, with one revision pass

Ask ChatGPT or Claude for headlines and service descriptions and you'll get something serviceable in seconds. It'll be slightly too long and slightly too pleased with itself. Tell it to cut every sentence in half and drop the adjectives, and the second draft is usually better than what most business owners write on their own.

You don't need a website builder for this part. You can do it today, in a free chat window, and paste the result into whatever tool you're using.

Layout: yes, to a point

AI produces competent, symmetrical, unremarkable layouts. Correct spacing, sensible hierarchy, nothing you'd complain about and nothing anybody would remember. That's genuinely fine for a plumber. It's a problem if your business sells taste.

The last 10 percent: no, and this is the real answer

This is where it falls down, every time, in every tool.

The AI gives you something that's 90 percent right. Then you need one specific change. The testimonial section should be two columns not three. The hero image needs to sit lower. Your logo has a particular blue and the generated palette fights it.

In most AI builders you now start negotiating with a chat box. You describe the change, it changes something else, you describe it again, it reverts the first fix. Twenty minutes later you're worse off than when you started. The tool generated into a closed template system, so the only lever you have is the prompt, and the prompt is a terrible screwdriver.

That's not a bug somebody will patch next quarter. It's what happens when the AI's output lands somewhere you can't directly edit.

Judgment: no, not close

AI doesn't know that half your revenue comes from one service you barely mention, or that your customers care about response time more than price, or that the photo of your actual shop converts better than the polished render. It has no access to your business. It's producing the average of every site like yours, and the average is the thing you're trying to beat.

So will AI replace web designers?

It's already replaced the low end, and that happened quietly. The $500 five-page brochure site is gone. Nobody's paying a person to arrange a hero and three service cards anymore, because a tool does it in thirty seconds for free.

What it hasn't replaced is anybody whose job is deciding. Brand direction, information architecture for something non-obvious, the taste call about what to remove. If anything those got more valuable, because now everybody has a competent-looking site and competent-looking is the new baseline rather than an advantage.

If you're a designer, the shift is from making the thing to directing the thing. That's a real change in the work and some people will hate it. It isn't extinction.
