What's actually different here, not just what's the same
The export line matches, but the reasoning underneath doesn't, and it changes what "leaving" even means on each platform. Wix's block is contractual and architectural at once — the site literally can't run outside Wix's own SaaS infrastructure, full stop, with no code-export button anywhere in the product. Framer's block is about what publishing actually does at request time — a live site depends on Framer's own rendering, image optimization, and font-serving pipeline, so there's no static artifact sitting behind the scenes to hand over even if Framer wanted to. Neither gives you an exit, but Wix is explicit that this is a permanent architectural choice, while Framer frames it as a consequence of how a published site currently works.
The template-lock question is where these two genuinely diverge, and it's arguably the sharper practical difference for a first-time builder. Framer has no equivalent commitment — the canvas is the canvas, and moving blocks, sections, or styles around later is just editing, not a structural change tied to an original choice. Wix ties your entire site to whichever template you picked the moment you started, with Wix's own guidance blunt that there's no in-place fix: build a second site and move your plan and domain over. That's a real cost difference if you get the first template choice wrong, and it applies across all three Wix editors, not just the classic one.
AI tooling also splits along different lines than you'd expect. Framer has exactly one AI system, available the same way regardless of which plan or view you're in. Wix's AI is fragmented by editor and by job: the AI Website Builder only creates new sites, Harmony's Aria is Harmony-specific and unavailable if your site is still on the classic Editor, and a set of narrower AI content tools (text, images, product descriptions, email) sit alongside both. Knowing which Wix editor a given site is on is a prerequisite for knowing which of Wix's AI tools actually apply to it — a question Framer doesn't have, since there's only one editor to be on.
Who is each one not for?
Framer is not for you if you need a native store with its own fee schedule and multi-marketplace selling built in, or if you're not sure of your design yet and want the freedom to fully rebuild without starting a second project — though on Framer that freedom exists inside one project either way, so this concern mostly doesn't apply to it.
Wix is not for you if you want a single, unified editor and AI system rather than three separate editor generations with different AI tools in each, or if you want the freedom to change your starting template without rebuilding the whole site from a blank one.
How to actually decide
Choose Framer if you want canvas-level design freedom with no structural commitment to your first layout choice, real code components, and you're fine with ecommerce meaning a connected Shopify account through a marketplace plugin.
Choose Wix if you want a native store with multi-marketplace selling, Velo's code layer for backend logic and database work without leaving the platform, or you're comfortable picking one of over 2,000 templates carefully up front because that choice becomes permanent for the site.
Neither, if your site's source of truth is a Figma file you've already designed and you don't need a CMS, a store, or a code layer at all.
