If you're searching "Squarespace alternatives" you probably already know why. The templates are beautiful and they're also everywhere, so your site looks like the three other sites in your industry. And the second you want something the template didn't plan for, you're writing custom CSS into a box at the bottom of a settings panel.

Here's an honest map of where people go, and what the move off Squarespace actually involves.

The export problem nobody mentions first

Before you compare anything, know what you can take with you. Squarespace's own export documentation is clear that the XML export covers layout pages and one blog page with its posts. It does not include your style settings, your custom CSS, album, cover, index, info, calendar, portfolio or store pages, audio, video or product blocks, or drafts. If you run more than one blog, only one comes out.

So the export is a text backup. Nothing more. Whatever you switch to, you are rebuilding the design. That changes the math on which alternative you pick, because "easy import" isn't a real deciding factor here.

Where people go

Wix. Bigger app ecosystem, more freeform editor, similar price band. Wix's own help center says a Wix site has to run on Wix servers and can't be exported to host elsewhere, so you're trading one closed platform for another.

Webflow. Genuine design control and clean code output. Steeper learning curve than Squarespace by a wide margin, and the pricing stacks per site plus per workspace seat.

WordPress. The most portable thing on this list, and the most work. You'll own your content forever and you'll also own updates, plugin conflicts and hosting.

Framer. Nice product, design-led, and real competition for Squarespace. Your site lives in Framer's editor though, so portability is the same story.

Figment. You design in Figma and we publish the file as a live site. More on that below.

What Figment gives you that Squarespace doesn't

Your website is a Figma file that you own outright. Not a template with your logo dropped in, not a theme you license. If Figment disappeared tomorrow you'd still have the design, in a format every designer on earth can open.

There's no template ceiling, because there's no template. You draw the page you want. Text sits where you put it instead of snapping back into a block Squarespace decided on.

Updates are design edits. Move the box, change the words, hit publish. A site goes live in under a minute. We've been doing this since 2021, and there are just over 20,000 published Figment sites out there now.

The AI part matters here too. An open canvas is something AI can meaningfully work on, versus a closed template system where the model can only fill in the blanks someone else drew. Stay on Squarespace if

You sell physical products and lean on their built-in commerce, scheduling or email campaigns. Replacing all of that piecemeal is a worse deal than the monthly fee.

You never want to think about your website again. Squarespace is genuinely good at "set it up once, forget it exists." Figment asks you to care about the design, because caring about the design is the whole point.

You don't want to open Figma. It's free and it's not hard, but it is a different tool and you should want to learn it.

Save your copy and images, rebuild the layout in Figma from screenshots or a free community template, publish with the plugin, point one DNS record, then cancel.
