Squarespace vs GoDaddy Website Builder: Which Should You Use?

Choose Squarespace if you want one consistent template-based editor with built-in commerce tools across every plan. Choose GoDaddy's Airo AI Builder if you'd rather describe your site in a chat prompt and want a documented way to download your code later — but check first whether your existing GoDaddy site is actually on Airo or the older Websites + Marketing editor, since they work completely differently. This isn't a close call on features alone; it's two different building models, sourced from each vendor's own pages, checked September 2026.

What am I actually comparing?

Squarespace is one product: pick a template, build inside its Site styles and Fluid Engine block editor, and Squarespace hosts the result. "GoDaddy" is more complicated. GoDaddy's own help center now names three separate products under the GoDaddy umbrella — Classic Websites + Marketing Website Builder, Airo AI Builder, and Airo for WordPress — and says plainly they "all create websites, but they work in different ways and come with different plans" (GoDaddy Help, "Which GoDaddy website builder do I have?", checked September 2026). This comparison focuses on Airo AI Builder, the chat-based tool GoDaddy's marketing pages currently lead with, and notes where the older Websites + Marketing editor differs.

How does building actually work on each one?

Squarespace's editing model is template-first: you choose a starting design, then adjust styles and drag blocks into place using Fluid Engine, its 24-column desktop grid system (Squarespace, "Edit your site with Fluid Engine", checked September 2026). It's a visual, click-and-drag process from the start.

Airo AI Builder works the opposite direction: you describe what you want in a prompt, and it generates a starting site, app, or store, which you then refine "by chatting further, clicking elements to edit manually, or editing the generated code directly" (GoDaddy, Airo AI Builder, checked September 2026). There's no blank canvas to assemble by hand as the starting point — the first version always comes from a prompt.

What does each one cost?

Squarespace sells four plans — Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced — priced from $25/mo billed monthly or $19/mo billed annually on Basic, up to $139/mo monthly or $99/mo annually on Advanced, per Squarespace's own pricing page as of this check. Our full breakdown of Squarespace's plans covers what each tier unlocks beyond the price, including the commerce and Digital Product fee schedule.

GoDaddy's Airo AI Builder has a free tier (50 AI credits per month, no card required, unlimited sites and apps that stay unpublished) and three paid tiers billed annually on GoDaddy's own pricing cards, checked September 2026: Starter at $9.99/mo (150 credits, 1 published site), Professional at $24.99/mo (300 credits, 10 published sites), and Ultimate at $99.99/mo (750 credits, 50 published sites). Every paid tier lists the same baseline extras — "Mobile-friendly site," "24/7 expert support," "Edit text and images without using credits," and "Download your code anytime" (GoDaddy). Our full GoDaddy Website Builder breakdown covers the older Websites + Marketing editor's pricing too, which works differently and isn't quotable from one clear GoDaddy page.

Neither vendor's numbers are guaranteed to stay put — check both pricing pages directly before you commit to a year of billing.

What happens to an existing site if I switch between them?

Neither platform carries a live site over to the other automatically. If you're moving off Squarespace, its export tool captures layout pages, one blog with its posts, and text/image blocks, but not style settings, custom CSS, product pages, or several other page types — see the export citation in the matrix above. If you're moving an existing GoDaddy Websites + Marketing site into Airo AI Builder specifically, GoDaddy calls that process a Rebuild, and its own help page is direct that "the result is a fresh design rather than an exact copy," with anything connected to payments, your store, or other integrations needing to be reconnected afterward (GoDaddy Help, "Rebuild my website in Airo AI Builder", checked September 2026). Either direction, plan the move as a real migration: note your existing URLs, and set up redirects on whichever platform becomes the new host once DNS points there. Our redirects guide covers building that map.

Who is each one not for?

Squarespace is not a fit if you want to build from a written prompt rather than a template, or if you ever expect to take the visual design — not just the content — somewhere else. Its export tool is documented to leave out style settings and custom CSS, so what comes out isn't a portable copy of the design.

GoDaddy's Airo AI Builder is not a fit if you want a mature, hand-built visual editor with a large third-party app or plugin ecosystem around it — it's prompt-first, and refining the result means chatting, clicking elements, or editing code, not assembling from a large library of pre-built sections the way Squarespace's block editor works. If your existing site is on the older Websites + Marketing editor rather than Airo, moving it isn't a clean upgrade either — expect a Rebuild, not a migration.

Where does Figment fit in?

Neither product is what Figment replaces. Figment publishes a website from a Figma design you've already built, through its Figma plugin — it has no template gallery, no chat-based site generator, and no store or transaction-fee schedule of its own. If your actual need is Squarespace's built-in commerce tools or GoDaddy's prompt-driven app generation, this comparison is the one that matters. Figment fits a narrower, different job: a design-controlled marketing site or portfolio published from Figma, for someone who wants neither a template system nor a chat-based generator in between their design and the live site.

Which should I actually pick?

  • Pick Squarespace if you want visual, template-based building with commerce tools built into every plan, and you're not planning to take the exact design elsewhere later.
  • Pick GoDaddy's Airo AI Builder if you'd rather start from a written description than a template, want the stated option to download your code, and your project might extend beyond a marketing site into a small app or dashboard.
  • Check which GoDaddy product your existing site actually runs before assuming an upgrade path exists — Websites + Marketing and Airo AI Builder don't convert into each other cleanly.

Bottom line: Squarespace is a single, consistent template-and-editor system with commerce built in everywhere. GoDaddy currently splits into a prompt-driven Airo AI Builder with a real code export, and an older template editor with none. Read both vendors' current pages — including which GoDaddy product you're actually looking at — before you commit to either.
