How the Wix Portfolio App Works

Wix Portfolio is a separate app you add to a Wix site, built around two structures: projects, which hold your actual work, and collections, which group projects together. Wix's own overview is addressed to anyone who is "a photographer, designer, artist, architect, or filmmaker," and says that with Wix Portfolio "you can display your work in customizable gallery layouts" (Wix, "Wix Portfolio: An Overview", checked September 2026). The app itself has no documented per-project media cap, but a real Wix site limit — the Premium plan requirement for a custom domain and ad removal — still applies to a portfolio built with it, the same as any other Wix site.

What is the Wix Portfolio app, exactly?

Wix Portfolio isn't a built-in feature of every Wix site — it's an app you add, similar to Wix Bookings or Wix Stores. Once added, each piece of work gets its own project page, which Wix describes as "the pages that display each project's information and media." To start, Wix's setup guide says you "create your first project by adding a title, description, basic info, and uploading your media" (Wix, "Wix Portfolio: Adding and Setting Up Wix Portfolio", checked September 2026).

Wix Portfolio includes a one-time AI setup option, and it's worth knowing the limit before you rely on it: "You can only use the AI setup feature once. Any additional projects you want to create after you complete the AI set up process must be created manually" (same source). Deleting and reinstalling the app doesn't reset that either — Wix's guide states plainly that "even if you delete the app and reinstall it, you still won't be able to use our AI setup feature to setup your portfolio." Plan on the AI setup covering your first project only, with everything after that added by hand.

How do projects and collections work together?

A project is one piece of work with its own page. A collection is a grouping layer on top: "Group your projects into collections to help visitors find what they're looking for" (Wix, "Wix Portfolio: An Overview"). Think of collections as categories — a photographer might use them for "Weddings," "Portraits," and "Events," each holding several projects.

Both live in the dashboard, not just the editor. Wix's management guide: "Manage all your portfolio's projects and the collections they're grouped into from your site's dashboard" (Wix, "Wix Portfolio: Managing Your Wix Portfolio", checked September 2026). From there you can create, edit, duplicate, hide, or delete a project, and filter or sort the list by visibility, collection, or creation date. Collections get the same basic management: "From the Collections tab you can create new collections, edit existing ones, and more" (same source).

One integration note worth flagging if you're setting this up now: Wix's guide states "as of April 2024, you can no longer connect your portfolio to app integrations" — existing integrations set up before that date keep working, but you can't add a new one today (Wix, "Wix Portfolio: Connecting Integrations", checked September 2026).

What are the media limits for a project?

Wix's own setup guide doesn't state a maximum photo or video count per project — it says to "create your first project by adding a title, description, basic info, and uploading your media," and separately describes adding projects "with as many photos and videos as you like" (Wix, "Wix Portfolio: Adding and Setting Up Wix Portfolio"). That's a statement about there being no per-project cap in the app itself, not a promise about your account's overall storage.

Storage is where a real ceiling exists, and it isn't part of the Portfolio app — it's a site-wide Wix limit. Wix's help center: "Free Wix sites come with up to 500MB of storage and up to 1GB bandwidth" (Wix, "About Storage and Bandwidth", checked September 2026). Premium plans raise both storage and bandwidth well past that, with higher tiers offering unlimited bandwidth. Individual files also have their own caps in the Wix Media Manager: images are capped at "50MB" and GIFs at "15MB" (Wix, "Wix Media: Supported Media File Types and File Sizes", checked September 2026). A portfolio full of large, uncompressed photography or video can hit the free plan's 500MB ceiling fast, even though the Portfolio app itself never stops you from uploading.

What actually needs a Premium plan?

Not the Portfolio app itself — Wix doesn't document a Premium requirement to install or use it. What does require Premium is standard across any Wix site, and it matters for a portfolio you're showing to clients or employers:

• A custom domain. Wix's guidance: "you need to upgrade to a Premium plan" to use your own domain name and remove Wix branding (Wix, "Choosing a Premium Plan", checked September 2026).
• Removing the Wix banner ad and setting a custom favicon. Wix states directly: "To remove the Wix banner ad from your site and use your own favicon, you need to upgrade to a Premium plan that includes these features" (Wix, "Removing the Wix Banner Ad and Favicon", checked September 2026).
• More storage and bandwidth, past the free plan's 500MB/1GB caps, as covered above.

Wix's Premium plans differ by name and by how much storage and bandwidth each includes, but the specific numbers per tier are shown by location on Wix's own pricing pages — check Wix's plans page directly for the current tiers rather than relying on a fixed figure here.

What if I want a different look for my portfolio later?

Wix Portfolio's projects and collections carry over regardless of which template your site uses, but the surrounding site design is a separate decision — and Wix locks that choice in early. How does this compare to a Squarespace portfolio?

The structures are different in a way worth knowing before you commit to one platform. Wix's projects-and-collections model is a dedicated app layered onto any Wix site, with no documented per-project media cap. Squarespace's portfolio pages are a native 7.1 feature with an explicit "up to 60 projects" limit and a 250-image cap per gallery block — real numbers Wix doesn't publish an equivalent for. Where does Figment fit in?

Not for this. Figment publishes a Figma design as a live website through its Figma plugin — it has no projects-and-collections structure, no built-in gallery app, and no dashboard for managing portfolio media the way Wix Portfolio does. If your priority is a fully custom visual design built in Figma and you're willing to lay out each project by hand rather than use an app that generates the structure for you, that's a different route, not a substitute for what's covered here.

Bottom line: Wix Portfolio organizes work into projects grouped by collections, with no documented cap on how many photos or videos a project can hold — the AI setup works once, then everything is manual. The real limits that apply are the ones every Wix site shares: a Premium plan for a custom domain and ad removal, and storage/bandwidth caps that scale with the plan you're on.
