"Free" in the Figma Community means a few different things, and the difference matters once you're shipping a commercial site.

Some files are free and that's the end of it. Some are a free teaser page with the real 20-page template sitting behind a Gumroad checkout. Almost everything on the Community is published under CC BY 4.0, which is free including commercially, and which asks you to credit the creator. Figma prints the license at the bottom of every file page. It's worth the two seconds it takes to scroll down and read it.

Here are twelve files I opened, checked the license on, and would use.

Free, no catch

Whitepace by Al Razi Siam is the one I'd start with if you're doing anything SaaS-shaped. The listing says 100% free for personal and commercial use in the first line. It's been opened by around 122,000 people, which is an absurd number for a Community file, and it comes with responsive versions for every device plus an animated prototype showing the breakpoints. License: CC BY 4.0.

Free Agency Template by Ali. Light and dark versions, built on auto layout with Figma Variables running the color system. Around 1,800 users and updated recently, which is rarer than it should be. CC BY 4.0.

Personal Portfolio Website Template by Andressa Belém. She made it as the example file for a Figma crash course she recorded, and published it with no strings. About 56,000 users, 1.3k likes. Because it was built to be taught from, the layers and groups are organized the way you'd want your own file organized. CC BY 4.0.

Free Website Template by Shah. Roughly 14,000 users. The description is a single sentence: free website template, ready to use elements. That's honest. Treat it as a kit of parts rather than a finished site. CC BY 4.0.

Aesthetic Personal website Template by Samarjit Mahi. He open-sourced his own portfolio landing page and wrote in the description that he wants people new to design to remix it and learn from it, with one request: don't sell it. Around 3,000 users. It's published as a prototype file, so you get the click-through as well as the frames. CC BY 4.0.

Free Portfolio Website Template by Sandra Benard. Minimal, dark mode, designed to get out of the way of the work you're putting in it. Smaller file, around 600 users. CC BY 4.0.

Free Figma Photography Portfolio Website Template by Ilia Bortnikov. Around 3,300 users. Responsive layout and a lot of image real estate, which is the entire job for a photography site. CC BY 4.0.

Free SAAS landing page by Subarno Paul. Clean, minimal, about 760 users. Good if Whitepace feels like more template than you need. CC BY 4.0.

SaaS Waitlist Landing Page Examples by Joshua McSorley. Not one template, but 20-plus waitlist page examples in a single file, free to use and adapt. Around 3,200 users. If you're pre-launch and staring at a blank canvas, this is a shortcut to a shape that works. CC BY 4.0.

Free Community Website Landing Page Design by Rene Borigas. Built for a local parish, and it's the best free file I found for a community group, club, or neighborhood organization. Warm rather than corporate. Around 480 users. CC BY 4.0.

Free Template for Agency Website by Iconstica. About 9,500 users. The agency layout is solid, and it bundles the Iconstica icon library, which the listing says covers over 2,800 icons in six styles. Grab it for the icons even if you don't use the layout. CC BY 4.0.

Digital Agency Company Website UI Design Template in Dark Theme by Praha, published as SquareUp. Around 35,000 users and 1.1k likes. Three screen sizes, auto layout throughout, frames named and structured. The listing says free and editable and means it. CC BY 4.0.

Free, with a paid version behind it

These are still worth opening. Just know what you're getting.

GoLive and B2Base, both by Karyna Movsha, are free files containing a complete landing page in two home variations, built with auto layout and a commercial-use license. The descriptions are upfront that the full versions run 22 and 23 pages and cost $35. The free landing page is genuinely a free landing page. If you only need a homepage, you're done.

PORTFOLIO DESIGN UI UX-FREE TEMPLATE by Shahithya Jeyakumar gives you three portfolio screens plus mockups, around 4,700 users, but the description points you to Gumroad for the full editable file. Fine as inspiration, less useful as a starting file.

A word on attribution

CC BY 4.0 is a real license, not decoration. If you publish a site that's recognisably someone's template, credit them. A line in your footer linking their Figma profile costs you nothing and it's the reason these files keep getting made. If you've redesigned it past recognition, use your judgement.

From file to live site

A free template solves the design problem and leaves the publishing problem sitting there. That's the part people underestimate.

Figment is a Figma plugin that turns your frames into a live website. Duplicate one of these files, make it yours, hit publish. The free tier hosts it on a subdomain with a small "Built with Figment.so" badge.
