Webflow vs Wix: A Capability Comparison
Webflow has one editor (the Designer) and a CMS and code export you pay for separately from hosting; Wix has three different editors from three different eras (Editor, Studio, Harmony), a CMS that Wix itself says isn't in all three yet, and no code export on any plan. That's the real shape of the choice - not which one is more powerful, but which trade-off you'd rather live with: one consistent tool with paid gates, or a bigger native feature set split unevenly across editor generations. What's actually different here, not just what's the same
Both vendors sell a hosted, closed platform - but Webflow's export gate is conditional (pay for a Workspace plan, get an export minus CMS/ecommerce/forms) while Wix's is architectural and absolute. A Webflow design can leave with you on the right plan; a Wix design never leaves, under any plan.
The CMS-and-editor relationship is the sharper day-to-day difference. Webflow's CMS works the same way regardless of which Site plan unlocked it - Collections, fields, and Collection pages behave identically once available. Wix's CMS is genuinely absent from its newest editor right now: Wix's own FAQ names CMS as something Harmony is still "working on adding." Starting a new Wix site today and wanting the CMS currently steers you toward the classic Editor or Studio, even though Harmony is the newer, AI-native option.
AI tooling splits along a similar seam. Webflow's AI sits inside one product surface, gated by plan tier rather than editor generation. Wix's AI is fragmented by which of its three editors a site is built in, and its flagship AI Website Builder is explicitly a new-site tool, not an editing tool for a site you already have.
Who is each one not for?
Webflow is not for you if you want ecommerce and a CMS bundled into one plan rather than priced and enabled separately, or if you want a single native app ecosystem for things like bookings, subscriptions, and multichannel selling without wiring up your own Collections and logic.
Wix is not for you if you want one consistent editor and AI system rather than three generations with an uneven feature split between them, or if there's any chance you'll want to export your design and self-host it later - Wix's architecture rules that out permanently, on every plan. How to actually decide
Choose Webflow if you want a CMS and code layer that behave consistently regardless of plan, you're willing to pay for a Workspace plan specifically to get a code export later, and you're comfortable pricing ecommerce as its own line item rather than a bundled feature. Choose Wix if you want native ecommerce, bookings, and a wide native app catalog bundled in rather than metered separately, Velo's backend code layer is enough without ever needing to leave Wix's servers, and you're fine picking whichever of the three editors currently has the specific feature (CMS, an app, an AI tool) you actually need.
Neither, if your site's source of truth is a Figma file you've already designed and you don't need a CMS, ecommerce, or a code layer at all. Figment publishes that Figma design as a live website through its Figma plugin - no CMS, no store, no Velo-style backend - and paid Figment plans include an HTML/CSS export, closer to Webflow's conditional export than to Wix's permanent lock-in. Webflow keeps one editor and layers its CMS, ecommerce, and code export as separate paid pieces that behave the same way once unlocked. Wix bundles more natively - stores, bookings, a wide app catalog - but splits its own AI tools and even its CMS unevenly across three editor generations, and locks your design into its servers permanently with no export path at any price. Both vendors update their products on their own schedule; check their current pricing and help pages directly, and remember Wix's own plans page is the only trustworthy source for what it actually costs where you are.
