Start with the fact that decides everything else. Wix's own help center states that a Wix site has to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers, because the platform runs on Wix's proprietary technology. There is no "download my site" button that produces something you can host somewhere else.

Your content belongs to you. The site does not travel. So when you compare Wix alternatives, ignore anything about smooth imports, because you're rebuilding no matter which direction you go. The real question is which platform you'd rather be stuck in next, or whether you can avoid being stuck at all.

What people switch to

Squarespace. Cleaner templates, tidier editor, similar price. Their export is limited to layout pages and one blog, without styles or CSS, so the portability story is only marginally better than Wix's.

Webflow. Real design control and exportable code on the right plan. Also a real learning curve. If you found the Wix editor fiddly, Webflow will not feel like relief on day one.

WordPress. Portable, enormous plugin ecosystem, and a maintenance job you now own. Great if you want control and have the patience.

Shopify. Only if you're actually selling. For a brochure site it's the wrong shape.

Figment. Design in Figma, publish that file as your live site. Covered below.

What Figment gives you that Wix doesn't

The design file is yours, in Figma, permanently. That's the opposite of the Wix arrangement. You can hand it to a designer, open it in ten years, or take it to another tool. No export request, no support ticket, no proprietary format.

There's no template ceiling either. Wix's freeform editor is more flexible than most builders, and it still bounds you inside what the editor understands. A Figma canvas has no opinion about what a website section is supposed to look like.

Editing is just designing. Change the frame, hit publish, and the site is live in under a minute. No widget settings, no "this element is locked to the section," no separate mobile editor with its own rules. You make a desktop frame and a mobile frame and we serve the right one.

And the canvas is the reason our AI work is going where it's going. AI can do real work on an open design file. Inside a closed widget system it can mostly rearrange the furniture someone else built. Our AI website builder is in early access right now, not generally available, and it's being built on top of the same Figma file rather than as a separate walled product.

We've been live since 2021. Roughly 35,000 people have signed up and just over 20,000 sites are published. Not a launch-week startup, and also not Wix's scale, which is a fair thing to know.

Stay on Wix if

You use Wix Bookings, Wix Stores or their email marketing and they're load-bearing for your business. Unbundling that into separate tools costs more time and money than the subscription does.

You need an app for something specific and Wix has it. Their app market is deep, and "there's an app for that" is a legitimate reason to stay.

You genuinely do not want to open a design tool. Figment assumes you'll design your site. If that sounds like a chore rather than the good part, Wix is a better fit and I'd rather tell you that now.

Moving off Wix

Copy each page's text into a doc, download your images, screenshot every page as a layout reference. Rebuild in Figma, either tracing your old layout or starting from a free community template. Publish with the plugin to a preview URL, click through everything, then change one DNS record. A Wix-registered domain can stay registered at Wix.
