Weebly vs Wix: Capability Comparison, and the Shutdown You Need to Know

Before comparing features: Weebly's own support site confirms it is unpublishing sites in 67 named countries on September 27, 2026, and ending account access on December 26, 2026, while Wix has made no comparable announcement. If your account is in one of those 67 countries, this comparison doesn't matter — you need to move, not choose a plan. Is the Weebly shutdown relevant to me?

Only if your account is registered in one of the affected countries. Weebly's regional notice states plainly: "We have made the difficult decision to wind down Weebly services in 67 countries," with affected sites "unpublished on 2026-09-27" and account login ending "2026-12-26" (Weebly Support, "Upcoming Changes to Weebly's Global Operations", checked September 2026). What does "ownership" actually mean on each?

Neither platform gives you a portable, self-hostable copy of the live site — the difference is in what you can get out. Weebly's own backup guide describes a site archive as something "you can save... as an offline backup of your website for safe-keeping or to recreate the site at another host," but the same page excludes blog and store pages from that archive because they "rely directly on our database" rather than existing as static files (Weebly Support, "Back Up Your Site", checked September 2026). Wix rules out the equivalent entirely. Its own help page states: "Your Wix site is a standard HTML5 site, and is built with Wix's technology. In order for your site to work properly, it needs to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers," adding that "since Wix is a SaaS solution, your site must run on Wix's servers" (Wix Help Center, "Exporting or Embedding Your Wix Site Elsewhere", checked September 2026). There is no code export, ZIP download, or self-hosting path documented for a live Wix site — only domain connection or transfer, which moves the domain, not the site.

How does hosting and domain setup compare?

Both platforms host the site for you; neither supports self-hosting. The practical difference is the domain-upgrade gate. On Weebly, a custom domain connects starting at the Personal plan, per its own pricing page tagline: "Connect to a custom domain." On Wix, connecting a domain you already own follows the same shape — Wix's help page states directly: "You must first upgrade your site to connect or transfer a domain" (Wix Help Center, "Connecting or Transferring a Domain Purchased Elsewhere to Your Wix Account", checked September 2026). Wix documents more here. Its help center describes the classic Editor as including "several AI tools, available from the AI Tools icon at the bottom left," while noting that "as opposed to the Wix Harmony Editor, it does not include the option to chat freely with AI throughout the creation process." Harmony adds Aria, described as "your skilled AI partner, ready to help at any point," accessible by clicking "Ask Aria at the bottom of the editor to start chatting" (Wix Help Center, "Wix Harmony Editor: The Difference between Wix Editor and Wix Harmony", checked September 2026). Wix also documents an official Wix MCP, a Model Context Protocol server that "lets you work with Wix from your AI agent," letting a connected agent "search the Wix documentation, write code for the Wix platform, and make API calls on Wix sites," and stating it is "available as a built-in connector in Claude" (Wix Developers, "The Wix MCP", checked September 2026).

Weebly's own help pages don't document a comparable AI website-generation feature, AI editing assistant, or developer-facing agent protocol. That's an absence in what Weebly publishes, not a statement from Weebly that no such feature exists.

How does ecommerce compare?

Weebly bundles a shopping cart into every plan, including Free, per its own pricing page — unlimited items, item options, and Quick Shop appear across all four tiers, with digital goods, a shipping calculator, and PayPal acceptance reserved for its paid or top tier. Wix gates ecommerce differently and says so directly: its own FAQ states "if you purchased the Light plan, you won't be able to accept payments through your site," and its plan-comparison page describes the Core or Business plans as the ones for anyone who needs "robust business features like eCommerce capabilities and payment processing" (Wix Help Center, "Choosing a Premium Plan", checked September 2026). In other words: Weebly includes basic selling even on its free tier; Wix reserves selling for a specific paid tier rather than any entry plan.

How does SEO compare?

Both document real, built-in SEO tools rather than requiring a third-party plugin. Weebly's pricing page lists "SEO" among the features included on every plan, Free included. Wix's SEO documentation describes an "SEO Setup Checklist," a "step-by-step plan designed to help you improve your site's SEO," alongside SEO Settings for editing page titles, descriptions, and URL slugs, structured data markup support, robots.txt control, and one-click Google Search Console and Analytics connections (Wix Help Center, "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)", checked September 2026). Wix's own SEO page also states that basic search-engine crawlability "applies to all Wix sites, whether or not they are upgraded to a Premium plan" — the SEO gate on Wix is about depth of tooling, not a free-vs-paid switch that turns indexing off. Wix's SEO tooling is more extensively documented across dedicated help pages; Weebly's is a single line item on its pricing page without a comparable dedicated SEO help hub that we could find.

Which one should I actually pick?

• You eventually want to leave the platform with your data intact: neither gives you a full export — Weebly's archive excludes blog and store content, and Wix has no site export at all. Plan on a manual rebuild either way if you ever move.
