If your Weebly site is in one of the 67 affected countries, it gets unpublished on September 27, 2026. You keep account access until December 26, 2026, which is your window to pull everything out.

Do the rescue part today. Pick a new platform later, when you're not against a clock. Losing the content is permanent. Choosing the wrong builder isn't.

Check whether this is actually you

Square announced this on June 20, 2026, framing it as regulatory changes and simplifying global operations. It hit 67 countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Chile, Colombia and Costa Rica, among many others. The US, UK, Canada and most of Western Europe are not on the list.

Check Weebly's own notice for the current country list and dates before you do anything else. Country lists and dates in shutdowns like this get revised, and Weebly's page is the only version that counts.

If you're in an affected country, you probably already noticed you can't publish new pages. That stopped back in June.

Save your content. Today, not next week.

Four things to get out, in priority order.

1. The HTML archive. Settings → General → Archive gives you a zip of your site. You can't usefully edit it, but it's a complete record of what your site said and how it looked. Download it and put it somewhere that isn't your laptop.

2. The text. Open every page and paste the copy into a doc. This sounds tedious and it takes about an hour for a typical site. It's the thing you'll actually need when you rebuild, because you can't copy-paste out of a zip file productively.

3. The images. Download originals where you still have them. Where Weebly has the only copy, open each image in a new tab and save it. Do this before the 27th, not before December, because unpublished sites are harder to scrape your own images out of.

4. Screenshots of every page. Full-page screenshots, desktop and mobile. This is your design reference when you rebuild, and it costs five minutes.

If you run a store or take bookings through Weebly, export your order and customer data from the relevant dashboards separately. The site archive doesn't include it.

Your domain is the part people get wrong

If you registered your domain through Weebly or Square, it does not disappear on September 27. The site stops serving, the registration is a separate thing.

Two options and both are fine. Transfer the domain to a registrar you control, which takes a few days and is worth doing while you still have account access. Or leave it registered where it is and just change the DNS record to point at wherever your new site lives.

What you should not do is let it lapse. A domain you've had for years carries every link anyone ever made to you. It's the single most valuable thing in this whole mess.

Then rebuild, without picking another Weebly

This is the part worth being slightly opinionated about, because the lesson of this shutdown is not "Weebly was bad." Weebly was fine. It put millions of small businesses online.

The lesson is that your site lived inside a proprietary editor, so when a company you don't control made a business decision in a boardroom, your website became their decision to unpublish. Any builder with a closed editor can do this to you again. Wix, Squarespace, whoever comes next. Not because they're villains, because that's what the arrangement is.

So the question I'd ask of any replacement is: if this company loses interest in five years, what do I walk away with?
